Statement from the Chair/Associate Dean

The Department of Orthopaedic Surgery, Sports Medicine and Rehabilitation have undergone a significant amount of change in the past year. We are now the Department of Orthopaedic and Plastic Surgery. Dr. Anil Krishnamurthy was elevated to Vice Chair of the Department. He is responsible for strategic planning and the academic activity of the Orthopaedic Division. His leadership has been stellar throughout the transition. Dr. Michael Prayson continues to lead the Orthopaedic Trauma fellowship. Both the Orthopaedic Surgery program, as well as the Orthopaedic Trauma fellowship, has continued to recruit excellent candidates. The closure of Good Samaritan Hospital this year has led to an increase in volume at the main campus at Miami Valley Hospital, but the transition has been well planned. The quality of patient care has been maintained at a high level. We are continuing to work with Premier Health Partners administration and basic scientists at Wright State main campus to maintain a high level of academic productivity. While significant challenges remain, support for research and scholarly activity is in place. Reestablishment of the biomechanics laboratory and tissue engineering laboratory is anticipated in the coming academic year. We are continuing to collaborate with other academic departments at Wright State such as Pharmacology, Dermatology and Biology. Plastic Surgery has been a Division of this Department since approximately 2008. Plastic Surgery continues to have a high level of clinical teaching and involvement by not only full time faculty, but also the institutional and voluntary faculty. New services are being provided to patients in the Miami Valley region that were not previously available. In particular, Hand and Upper extremity replantation and reconstruction is now commonplace at Miami Valley Hospital. Dr. Sunishka Wimalawansa has begun to develop a targeted muscle reinnervation program to allow the use of advanced bioprosthetics for upper extremity amputees. In addition, brachial plexus reconstruction is now being performed at Miami Valley Hospital. Dayton Children’s Hospital has expanded to include a new patient care tower and a satellite center in Springboro. There are now two pediatric plastic surgeons performing major congenital craniofacial reconstructions in Dayton. Patients and their families had to previously travel to other cities to have this type of surgery. Our faculty continues to reach beyond the Miami Valley to participate in the mission of global health. Dr. Steve Schmidt and the Legacy of Healing continue their annual mission work. They care for hundreds of plastic, hand and general surgery patients each year in underserved areas of Latin America. In addition, Dr. Chris Gordon and Dr. Salim Mancho perform cleft surgeries in Cuba and Ghana respectively. To summarize, the last 18 months have presented many challenges and changes. The resiliency of the faculty and residents has been tremendous; their outstanding dedication to continuing improvement of patient care in the greater Miami Valley area is second to none. The future remains bright due to the dedication of the physicians and staff in the Department of Orthopaedic and Plastic Surgery.
