reminded the members about the RotaVille Project – a JOINT Global Grant (GG) between the Rotary Clubs of Bali and the Rotary Club of Andong Central, Korea (D3630). The Bali GG Committee has invited our members to attend an outing to East Bali (Br. Gulinten, Bunutan, Abang, Karangasem) to visit this project on Sunday, 16 February. Please contact P Raphaël if you wish to attend.
SaA Sally (below left) thanked Rtn. John vG for volunteering to be the greeter during the Thursday Fellowship evening at Anantara. She informed the members that the Fellowship Evening survey has been sent again. Please complete and return it to P Raphaël. It will determine if our club will have bi-monthly or monthly fellowship evening on Mondays. Lastly, the Anantara has kindly agreed to offer our members and their guests a 25% discount on a package of dinner after attending the Fellowship Evening. Valet parking included. SaA Sally told the members that her husband, Ken Wang, had kindly donated IDR 1 million to the ‘Have a Heart Fundraiser.’ THANK YOU Ken …. PN Barbara (right) again reminded the members and guests about our upcoming ‘Have a Heart Fundraiser’ – scheduled for Saturday, 22 February 2014 at the Cocoon Beach Club in Seminyak. She THANKED the members who have generously donated prizes to date – but said MANY more are needed. Tickets are IDR 850,000 each and tables of 10 are very available. Please purchase your table or individual tickets from Club members (Rtns. PN Barb, P Raphaël, HM Mary, PP John G., SaA Sally, Virginie, John vG, Jörg, Marie-Francoise and Catharina), or the Cocoon Beach Club, Biasa Seminyak or Sanur, Harris Hotel, Beachwalk Kuta and the SMILE Shop Ubud. 2
Press releases are going out soon which should guarantee a VERY successful evening. As a little surprise - some of our members have volunteered to be part of the entertainment. And please consider that this very special evening is the perfect opportunity to show potential NEW members what the RCBS is doing in our community. Lastly, PN Barbara told the members that she will be attending a Rotary meeting at the RC of Bali Denpasar and Kuta, inviting our fellow Rotarians to join us for very worthwhile, enjoyable evening out. SaA Sally will attend the meetings of the RC of Bali Nusa Dua and Benoa. Rtn. Marie Francois will attend the RC of Bali Ubud Sunset. Rtn. Florian (left), Chair of Club Admin, spoke to the members about the club’s UPDATED web site, www.rotaryseminyak.org (http://www.clubrunner.ca/Portal/Home.aspx?accountid=9161#) He presented the various pages one-by-one: Welcome from P Raphaël (with a photo from his ‘Vogue’ Magazine days), SITE Pages (About Rotary, About our Club, Club Projects, Press Releases, Weekly Bulletins, Links, Contact Us and Committee pages). There is a ‘login’ section, which included member profiles, photos, email message content and attendance. Rtn. Florian asked for a ‘volunteer’ to help him with the Social Media aspect of the Club, which includes our FB page, Twitter, etc. Rtn. Detlev announced that on Sunday, 2 February 2014, he will be having a special brunch at his house in Canggu (Jl. Pantai Perenen 42 / Gang Gunung Agung No. 3) starting at 14:00, which will be in celebration of Chinese New Year. Please remember to BYO beer and/or wine and be prepared for some GREAT fellowship and a DELICIOUS lunch. Sec. PP Anita reported that on Thursday, 30 January 2014, P Raphaël, Claudette De Jonge, Edgar Lammertse and herself visited the ‘Panti Tresna Werda Wana Seraya’ (Retirement / Nursing Home) in Padang Galak, Sanur. Nine years ago the RCBS sponsored a project, headed by Rtn. Virginie, that helped renovate and then donate furniture to this home. Furniture came from The Legian Hotel (former member Hans Meier), medical cabinets from Rtn. Dr. Taty and some major roof repairs from a local businessman and the RCBS. Claudette and Edgar from Belgium, who have been to a few of our meetings and have an interest in this facility, informed the Club a few weeks ago that according to photos that they had received, the Retirement Home was looking very rundown. So it was decided that some members should visit this Home and see for themselves what the status of the facilities were like. Ibu Ratna Ningsih, the Facility Director, greeted us upon arrival and much to our surprise the facility was in excellent condition as government funds had been received in 2012 for a total renovation.
3
There are 50 residents - 39 women and 11 men. The Home sit on one-hectare and has the following facilities: private bedrooms, dormitory for residents who need assisted care, entertainment room, dining room, kitchen, medical clinic, a large garden and bales for relaxing. The compound is very clean and appointed well with clean beds for all, TVs, wheelchairs, medical equipment and a good
relationship with the nearby hospital, in case there is a need for them to intercede. There are 19 full-time staff who are responsible for the care of the residents. The ages of the residents range from 60 to over 100 years. They were very HAPPY to have some ‘foreign’ visitors and were extremely friendly. It was a very rewarding experience to be able to visit a former RCBS project and witness how the Indonesia Government has given more attention to this sector of society. We should monitor this Retirement Home to see if they may need yet more assistance from the RCBS. A SPECIAL Thank You goes out to Claudette and Edgar for bringing this former project to our present attention.
Jeff Moch, the F & B Manager at the Warisan Restaurant, thanked the members for bringing so many of their friends to their restaurant every week. He said it was their great pleasure to provide lunch for a ‘special’ group of Community VOLUNTEERS every week. Jeff then took a moment and informed the members about Warisan’s Jazz singer who performs for their dinner guests every Monday, Wednesday and Friday evenings. He encouraged the member to come alone some evening and treat themselves to a very pleasurable night out with someone special.

‘Yayasan Senyum Bali (Bali Smile Foundation)’ by Honorary Member Mary Northmore SaA Sally introduced Honorary Member (HM) Mary Northmore (right), the Founder and Chair of the Yayasan Senyum Bali (Bali Smile Foundation) http://www.senyumbali.org. The RCBS has been supporting the Smile Foundations for past six years with a number of fundraisers and more recently the weekly Sunday Brunches sponsored by Rtns. Detlev and Lusi. The RCBS is currently organizing the ‘Have a Heart Fundraiser’ and preparing a US$ 199,000 Global Grant so that 180 Cleft and Craniofacial Operations can be completed during the next 12 months. HM Mary reported that the Bali SMILE Foundation has for eight years been dedicated to providing health services for people by facilitating free Cleft lip/palate and Craniofacial operations for patients living in Bali, West Nusa Tenggara (NTB) and East Nusa Tenggara (NTT). In 2013, the Smile Foundation facilitated 278 operations: 158 Cleft lip/palate, 100 Craniofacial (non-cleft done in Bali), 15 Craniofacial (non-cleft done in Australia Unit (ACFU) Adelaide), 5 other operations, i.e. accidental trauma, reconstruction of bone implantation, chemotherapy, etc. Since 2005, the Smile Foundation has facilitated 1,792 operations !!! The patients are categorized into two categories: Cleft lip/palate and other Craniofacial deformities. HM Mary showed many examples of ‘before’ and ‘after’ photos of patients who have received operations in Bali and Adelaide in 2013. The results were remarkable, especially for infant children. HM Mary expressed such gratitude to the doctors involved, especially Professor Dr. David J. David from Adelaide, Australia. The Hospitals here in Bali: Sanglah Community Hospital, Bali Royal Hospital, Dharma Yadnya Hospital and Surya Husadha Hospital and the two hospitals in Adelaide: The Royal Adelaide and the Women’s and Children’s Hospital, enjoy very close, professional working relations. Other donors aiding the SMILE Foundation are the Benjamin Foundation, Smile Train, HSBC Bank, Amadea Resorts and Villas. HM Mary proudly informed the members that the SMILE Shop (thrift store) in Ubud, which is staffed by volunteers, pays for ALL the operational costs of the SMILE House (Jln. Pulau Aru. No. 9, Denpasar - near the Sanglah Community Hospital). The SMILE shop has sales of approximately IDR 24 million per month. Thanks to Rtns. PE Doris and Virginie (Harris Hotel Group), the SMILE Shop has received consistently large donations of saleable items on a monthly basis. In addition to this generous HELP, there has also been excellent support from Anantara, Seminyak, Villa Belle, Maya Ubud, Chedi and Anisa Production. In concluding her very informative talk, HM Mary showed a short film called “Changing Faces with a smile – Operation Smile” which is about a little Brazilian girl – who discovers her new smile. A picture (film) is worth a THOUSAND words ……. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=odxzGDCQA9U
