SALZBURG WEILL CORNELL SEMINARINFECTIOUS DISEASES May 7-13, 2017 Group Photo of Faculty and Fellows
SEMINAR DIARY FROM FELLOW Diary of Lernik Grigoryan, MD Yerevan State Medical University after M. Heratsi, Yerevan, Armenia 07.05-13.05.2017 7 May, Sunday evening. From 7 to 13 May I was in Salzburg, spending an intensive academic week in one of the most beautiful cities in Europe. We had a transit flight through Vienna to Salzburg, which was pretty comfortable. I enjoyed my trip immensely and the experience was one that I will remember for the rest of my life. It was my first trip to Austria. I was a bit disappointed, because the weather wasn't ideal, but we received a very warm welcome on a rainy May morning when we were checking in in Schloss Arenberg. We rested a bit, then went for a walk to explore the beautiful Salzburg and enjoyed tasty Austrian street food. We were very surprised to find out that on Sunday almost all shops were closed. But we managed to grab a bite in a tiny cafe. In the evening we met the other participants of the conference and heard the opening speech from Mr. Wolfgang Aulitzky, who introduced the teaching staff. The atmosphere was friendly and inspiring. We had a tasty dinner, after which we went to sleep to be rested and energized for tomorrow's lectures. 8 May, Monday. After a quick breakfast we had pre-seminar test. I took it seriously and spend quite a bit time on it. Some points were arguable and I had doubts while choosing the right answer. Luckily we
had a chance to discuss it with other participants during coffee break. Then we had our first lecture from Jared Knopman, which was about the difference between carotid endarterectomy and carotid artery stenting, indications and benefits of each method. After break our lecturer gave us theoretical information about head traumas. During next lecture Peter Winkler shared his experience about microsurgical neuroanatomy of the temporomesial region. He presented pictures made by him about neuroanatomy, which was impressive and educational. After lunch break we had a long lecture from Antonio Bernardo, who made the presentation in 3D format. It was a very unique experience for me, since I've never seen it before and it helped to understand the skull base anatomy very easily. 9 May, Tuesday. I woke up pretty early at 6am, anticipating that it's going to be a hard day. After breakfast professor Peter Winkler started to explain how to do surgeries in and around the third ventricle․ It was an interesting lecture, where the professor was presenting pictures made by him. The pictures were prominently presenting the relationships between anatomic structures. Next lecture was dedicated to Endovascular Management of Aneurysms. I was looking forward to that lecture and it was very interesting for me because as a future vascular neurosurgeon I came across aneurysms many times. During next 3 hours we were listening with absorbed attention a lecture from Antonio Bernardo about skull base, a person, for whom there are no inaccessible segment on skull base. After lunch case presentations began. To be honest I prepared a presentation, but since this was my first medical conference in abroad, I was a bit hesitant, and decided to skip the case presentation this time. But I'm definitely going to make presentation next time, if I'll be selected. After a delicious dinner we went to sleep. 10 May, Wednesday. This morning was different from others in a good way. I woke up and it wasn't raining like previous days. The weather was perfect and the temptation was huge to get out there and explore the city. But there were more important things planned for us. After a quick breakfast we headed to cadaverlab where prof. Antonio Bernardo and Jared Knopman presented on cadaver the operation accesses to the skull base during 5-6 hours․We were very tired after this, but professor's suggestion to explore the Christian Doppler University Hospital was very appealing, so we followed him. We've been in different departments, including neurosurgical. I felt like every detail was taken under consideration in this clinic and it occurred to me, that every doctor would like to work in this kind of hospital. Last but not least we had the honor to be in professor's office and leave reminiscence in his diary. Although we were tired, but we walked all the way to Schloss Arenberg, taking pictures of the beautiful Salzburg. After dinner we were ready for sleep. 11 May, Thursday. We heard the lecture from Bernhard Meyer, who presented the main aspects of treatment of gliomas. During next 2 hours prof. Philip Stieg presented surgical management of aneurysms. It was very practical and educational. Next was for interactive lecture about Surgery for cavernous malformation presented by Claudius Thome. After lunch we proceed with case presentations. After dinner we heard Chamber Music, beautiful composition performed by Spanish siblings, which was very relaxing. 12 May After breakfast we heard some more interesting lectures from the leading experts of the field. After lunch I tried to memorize everything I learned during lectures in order to have good results for post-seminar test. It didn't take me long time to finish the test. To be honest I was expecting that this time it will be different from pre-seminar test, but they were just the same, which made it pretty easy
for us. In the evening, during graduation dinner I met my countryman, who was doing his observership in of the clinics in Salzburg and heard the concluding speech from faculty members. Thus, I had a very productive academic week in Salzburg. This conference contributed to my personal and professional development a lot. I gained new knowledge, felt the real intercultural communication and made a lot of new friend. We left with the hope to return very soon. Tomorrow is our flight back home. Soon I'll be back to work and daily routine. Thanks a lot to Faculty and Administration of Schloss Arenberg for this amazing week. Lernik Grigoryan
SEMINAR DIARY FROM FELLOW Diary of Olesia Karpova, MD Voronezh N.N.Burdenko State Medical University, Voronezh, Russian Federation 07.05-13.05.2017 7 May, Sunday evening. It was my first trip abroad. Full of impressions about flight and a little tired, I arrived in Salzburg. This is a beautiful city, especially in this season. I was wondered by neat and clean streets, plenty of greenery and flowers. I found Schloss Arenberg very nice and cozy. The castle is located in a beautiful place, surrounded by a wonderful park with a view of the mountains. After welcome reception we enjoyed very tasty dinner and were introduced to each other. The atmosphere in Schloss Arenberg was very friendly and calm. We wanted to walk with new friends, but it was raining very hard, and all participants went to sleep, waiting for tomorrow. 8 May, Monday. Wake up at 6 o’clock without any difficultness. After breakfast the seminar started. Seminar Coordinator Elisabeth Bourg introduced the aim and rules of whole seminar. Pre-seminar test was very discussible and interesting. The first lection of Dr. Jared Knopman was dedicated to Carotid Endarterectomy versus Carotid Stenting. It was especially important lecture for me, because I'm dealing with a stroke problem. And Carotid Artery Stenosis is a common cause of a stroke. After break we listened about Head Trauma. I liked it was perfect presentation by Dr. Jared Knopman. The Microsurgical Neuroanatomy of the Temporomesial Region lecture, presented by Prof. Peter A. Winkler, gave more theoretical information about the anatomy of the nervous system. And it was accompanied by remarkable illustrations. Lunch….. After next I enjoyed by 3D - presentations of Dr. Antonio Bernardo. For me (as a neurologist) it was difficult to perceive information about surgical approaches, but it was a great opportunity to recall the anatomical features of the brain. Now I can say about my first opinion about the seminar: it was very smart to combine two types of specialist on one course – neurologists and neurosurgeons. After lectures I with my new friends from Kazakhstan, Belarus, Latvia, Mexico, Ukraine had promenade to the city center. On the way, we shared our impressions of the lectures and discussed some issues. Unfortunately, it was raining very hard again. And we could not walk much, because many of us forgot
the umbrellas. A little wet, but happy, we returned to Schloss Arenberg. We were waiting for a delicious dinner, after which I went to prepare for tomorrow's performance with case presentation.
9 May, Tuesday. Wake up, breakfast… Wonderful lectures of Prof. Peter A. Winkler and Dr. Jared Knopman again. Coffee break…. The next lectures of Dr. Antonio Bernardo were connected us to the world of anatomy again. Vessels, nerves, anatomical channels ... It was better than any atlas. After Lunch the fellows started their case presentations. Mine was penultimate. I must say I was a very nervous, but friendly and kind atmosphere in the lecture hall gave me confidence. I’m very pleased to Faculty members for interesting discussion after speech of every fellow. After lectures, I went with my friends to the city again. The weather was wonderful. We visited the Hohensalzburg castle and we were a lot of walking in the historic center of Salzburg. The day was finished in one of the local bars under cheerful conversation 10 May, Wednesday. It was an unusual day, because we spent it in Research Laboratory for Microsurgical Neuroanatomy. Cadaveric dissections, 3-D visualization and virtual reality…. It was awesome! Faculty members (Dr. Antonio Bernardo, Dr. Jared Knopman) showed us the technique and basic surgical skills on brain and let some of us do it by ourselves. At the conclusion of work in the laboratory, Prof. Winkler introduced us to the hospital and the surrounding area, told the history of the hospital, showed the neurosurgical department. The walk was finished in his private office, where we met each other even closer. Each participant wrote a wish in a special professor's diary and received a commemorative disk. On our return to Schloss Arenberg we visited the wonderful Mirabel gardens and Mozart's Café, where we ate the real Austrian strudel! It was a wonderful conclusion of such interesting working day. 11 May, Thursday. I have noted that 60 min. lectures does not put us to sleep – interactive and exciting way to teach. The wonderful lectures of Prof. Philip Stieg helped me to understand some points of management of intracranial AVMs and aneurysms, their outcomes and adequate treatment. Lunch….. Group photo with Faculty… Topics about gliomas (Dr. Bernhard Meyer) and cavernous malformations (Dr.Claudius Thomé) were very interesting and useful for me. Case presentations after lunch… My friends and colleagues have successfully made a presentation. And after Workshop we were informed that presentation of our friend from Ukraine - Dr. Ziabchenko was selected for electronic library! This day evening we were invited to one of the clubs of Salzburg for dance party. 12 May, Friday. The last lectures …The week in Schloss Arenberg have passed as 1 day… This day I learned about new aspects of epilepsy surgery (Dr. Karl Schaller) and surgery for meningiomas (Dr. Martin Ortler). Interesting video materials and real clinical cases helped us to understand the problem better. Additional thanks for Dr. Claudius Thome for informative and interesting lectures, case presentations and discussion. At Graduation Dinner despite the solemnity and awards it was a little bit sad. For this short period we have become attached to each other. Faculty members have told their final speech, we received certificates and disks with presentations.
I will remember this seminar for a long time. I got a lot of knowledge about nervous system's anatomy. This will help me in my work with students in our department. Also, after listening to the lectures, I made important conclusions about a management of the patients with cerebrovascular diseases. Tomorrow is departure. Come back to our relatives and friends, work and daily routine... Thanks to Faculty and Administration of Schloss Arenberg for this wonderful week! Olesia Karpova
