Os ordinal numbers (números ordinais) são números utilizados para indicar ordem ou hierarquia relativamente a uma sequência.
No inglês, a formação dos números ordinais é diferente da formação dos ordinais em português: apenas o último número é escrito sob a forma ordinal.
Todos os outros números são utilizados sob a forma de números cardinais em inglês.
Exemplos:
- 23rd - twenty-third
- 135th - a/one hundred thirty-fifth
- 1.234th - a/one thousand two hundred thirty-four

Forma abreviada dos ordinais
Para escrever os números ordinais em inglês sob a forma abreviada, são utilizadas as últimas duas letras das respectivas formas dos números ordinais por extenso.

Observação: na forma abreviada, as duas últimas letras também podem ser escritas de forma elevada.

Números ordinais nas datas
Os números ordinais em inglês também são utilizados para escrever datas.
Exemplos:
Inglês americano
03/15/1982 - March 15th, 1982 (March fifteenth, nineteen eighty-two).

Ambos os exemplos são traduzidos em português como 15 de março de 1982 (quinze de março de mil novecentos e oitenta e dois).

Quando a representação gráfica de um título hierárquico utiliza números romanos, a forma por extenso e a leitura são feitas com a utilização de números ordinais.
Exemplos:

- King Henry VIII - King Henry the Eighth (Rei Henrique Oitavo).
